JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
The next new cancer treatment may be a 50-year-old diabetes drug.
Scientists say early tests found the drug metformin prevented tumors in mice and reduced the likelihood that diabetics would develop a malignancy.
The drug, which is currently used to lower blood sugar, sells for about 5-cents a pill.
If the latest trials on breast and other tumors are successful, metformin could become a cheap weapon in the fight against a number of diseases including pancreatic and ovarian cancers.
