Minority children not well protected in automobiles

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A new study finds African American and Hispanic infants and toddlers are unrestrained at rates ten times that of white children. And among older children, the difference is two-fold.

It's an alarming find and shows that road safety advocates still struggle with the challenge of increasing child safety restraint use among minorities.

The reasons range from lack of education about the importance of car seats and seat belts to some parents not being able to afford to buy the proper car seats.

The study was done by researchers at the University of Michigan.
