Male DNA found in women's brains

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

From the "gee whiz" files, scientists have discovered male DNA is often found in the brains of women. It's unclear what, if any, implications this has for women's health.

Doctors suspect the male DNA is most likely leftover from prior pregnancies with a boy.

The researchers who did the study at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Washington State say it's interesting that the fetal cells appeared to cross the blood-brain barrier.

Experts say it opens a field of study on what benefit male DNA has on brain health and what implications it might have on certain diseases of the brain.

The study is published in PLOS ONE.
