Flu shots and flu-mist nasal spray are now available at doctors' offices and pharmacy clinics across the country.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports more than 85-million doses of the flu vaccine have been distributed. 135 million doses are expected this season.
This year's vaccine protects against two new strains of the virus that last year's vaccine didn't have.
While last year's flu season was mild... Experts with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say influenza is often unpredictable.
Along with handwashing and coughing etiquette -- the vaccine is the best protection we have. "A recent cdc study for the 2010-2011 season estimated that flu vaccine that year prevented almost 5 million cases, 2 million medical visits and an estimated 40,000 hospitalizations," said Dr. Howard Koh with the CDC.
Federal health officials recommend everyone over the age of 6 months get vaccinated -- including pregnant women.
