CLARKSDALE, MS -
(WMC-TV) – Two murders. Two days. Two blocks from one another.
Clarksdale police officers are twice as busy now as they add another murder to the growing list.
Wednesday night's homicide makes four murders this year.
In the past six months Clarksdale Police also reported 17 people injured from gunshot wounds and 21 homes fired into.
James Cotton Junior, 20, was shot in the back of the head through his window late Wednesday night.
His mother said she would do anything to see her son again.
"I would trade places with my child," said Nakita Ellis.
Captain Robbie Linley said the most recent murders looks like an assassination.
"I would say that, yes, he is the target because this, like I said, it appears the subject walked right up to the window so he saw exactly who he was shooting," said Captain Linley, Clarksdale Police Department.
On Tuesday we showed you the statistics that the police department is up against. After Wednesday's homicide, the situation in Clarksdale does not appear to be getting any better.
"People just taking people's lives for what reason, for what reason?" asked Ellis.
Police say reasons for violence could include everything from gangs to drugs.
Interim Chief Whit Read took over a few weeks ago, after another chief retired. He said he is ready to start cleaning up.
"With so much violent crime, particularly in the past six months, is it time to start asking other agencies nearby for help?" asked Action News 5's Michael Clark.
"Absolutely, that's one of the key issues we're addressing now, I've reached out to federal and state agencies, also some local police and sheriff's departments in the area so we can reach out and start sharing intelligence," replied Whit Read.
For now, law enforcement will hit the streets and talk to citizens to get answers that could help solve crimes like the murder that has ripped the Ellis family apart.
"I love him and mommy's sorry she didn't get a chance to tell you," said Ellis.
As of Thursday afternoon, the Clarksdale Police Department was still looking for a suspect in James Cotton's murder.
