Tackling domestic violence with Purple for Peace

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Domestic violence in Mississippi was front and center in Jackson Friday. A Purple for Peace event shed light on the deadly consequences of this crime.

The Mississippi Coalition Against Domestic Violence organization serves as an advocate for battered women to help all victims of domestic violence. A special event was held Friday in Jackson to build awareness of family violence prevention efforts. But it also served to honor those who have been lost and those who instrumental in the movement.

The Executive Director of the National Resource Center for Domestic Violence Anne Menard said Friday more work is needed. "This is a complex issue. It can only be addressed if we work together. People from law enforcement to domestic violence programs, the community, faith community work in whatever ways we can to increase our understanding of domestic violence and to move on, that is what's going to make a difference."

Mississippi ranks 2nd highest in the nation for domestic violence. And 9th in the country for the number of women murdered by men. Advocates say most of those murdered were by killed by someone they knew.
