U.S. Corps of Engineers to begin dredging Port of Vicksburg

Posted: Updated:

Officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers say they're planning to dredge the Port of Vicksburg Monday to help river traffic deal with low water levels in the Mississippi River.

Although Tropical Storm Isaac provided some relief from the ongoing drought, the Mississippi River is headed back down to lower stages.

Droughts across the nation led to low water levels in the mighty Mississippi this year, which has caused problems for businesses traveling on the river.

Rain in the upper reaches of the Mississippi River Valley has helped conditions for the moment.
