Troopers find 2 kids in trunk during ETX traffic stop

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - After receiving a tip that two children were placed in the trunk of a vehicle traveling south on U.S. Highway 59, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers stopped a Dodge Charger Sunday afternoon and found there were indeed two kids in the car's trunk.

"State Troopers spoke with all occupants of the vehicle, including the minor children, and determined that the children were safe and uninjured," Trooper Stephanie Davis, a public information officer with the DPS District Office, wrote in an e-mail. "State troopers did not make an arrest in this incident."

However, the DPS troopers did inform the mother of the children, the passenger in the vehicle, of the Texas law which states that all children under the age of 8 must be in a child safety seat and all other occupants must be secured by a seatbelt.

When asked why the children were traveling in the Charger's trunk, Davis said, "Their mother, at the request of the children, allowed them to ride in the trunk."

No further details were available as of 2:35 p.m. Monday.
