The number of child abuse injuries has increased over the past decade.
Using hospital discharge data, doctors at Yale discovered the incidence of serious injuries due to child abuse rose 5-percent from 1997 to 2009.
This is in contrast to U-S Child Protective Services data, which show a decrease in child abuse.
Researchers say this may be because of changes made to how cases are reported to agencies.
During the studied time period, the percentage of cases on medicaid increased from 59% to 74%.
