Supervisors vote down landfill expansion

HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Homeowners who live near a Hinds County landfill won a big victory Monday after the Board of Supervisors voted to deny expansion of the operation.

The Faircloth Rubbish Landfill is located just south of Clinton. It was once a dirt pit which has been filled up with construction rubbish and is near some homes. That is where the objection comes to the proposed expansion. The boardroom at the Hinds County Board of Supervisors was packed Monday morning with people on both sides of the issue.  In the end, the vote was three to two against an expansion of the landfill.

Board president Robert Graham voted with the people who live in the area and against the expansion.

"I had to side with the residents, the people that live there, I had to consider all of the businesses, not just one," said Graham.

Supervisor Phil Fisher, who represents the area, voted for the company that wants to expand.

"They have been there for a long time, it's a tough issue that you have to deal with, but at the end of the day you have to come down on one side or the other."

Fisher got only one vote of support and that was from Doug Anderson.

Attorney Marc Brand represents people who own a tax commission building across the road.

"The tax commission has been using the dump as a reason that they want to leave. There are 500 jobs over there at the tax commission," said Brand.

"Sometimes you just have to make a decision for what's best for years down the road," said Clinton Mayor Rosemary Aultman.
