Today marks 50 years since the integration of Ole Miss. James Meredith was the first African American student to enroll at the University of Mississippi on October 1, 1962.
The university has planned a variety of events to mark the anniversary including a walk to retrace Meredith's first day on campus.
His enrollment prompted a state-federal standoff, sparked deadly mob violence and ended the university's official policy of racial segregation.
Ole Miss will continue to honor Meredith with events leading up to the school's homecoming game in mid-October when Courtney Pearson will be crowned homecoming queen.
Pearson will be the university's first African American to wear the crown.
