Women who were sexually abused reluctant to seek medical care

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Women who were sexually abused as children or young adults are much less likely to be screened for cervical cancer.

A British study finds one in four of these women hadn't had a pap smear in more than five years and one out of ten never had one.

Many women said the procedure evoked traumatic memories of their abuse, while others said it was painful, made them feel powerless, and gave them low self-esteem.
