JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
A new study confirms children's bicycle helmets effectively protect the head and brain during a crash.
Although head injury is the most common cause of death and disability from bicycle crashes -- experts estimate only 15 to 25 percent of kids wear helmets.
Using cadaver skulls, researchers found helmets reduced the force of a head impact at 30 miles an hour -- to an impact of only seven miles an hour.
The helmeted skulls could also withstand up to 470 pounds in a crush test.
This study was led by researchers at Illinois Neurological Institute and published in Journal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics.
