Beer bottles and trash sit alongside toys on the porch of the house in the 2100 block of Martin Luther King Drive in Vicksburg. Inside, the house looks recently abandoned. This is where police say 33 year old James Cubit, Jr. raped a 5 year old girl at least twice over the weekend of September 23.
The girl's mother left her in the care of Cubit, her fiancee.
"Apparently the child told the mother over the course of the weekend of the incident that had occurred," says Vicksburg Police Captain Bobby Stewart. "She did receive some injuries."
The girl was admitted to the hospital for observation on the night of September 23, and released the next day.
The girl's mother alerted police to the crime.
A neighbor who asked not to be identified says Cubit, his fiance, and two girls and a boy moved in about three weeks ago, then moved out after the incident.
"I didn't know them. I just seem 'em coming and going to the store," he says. "It's something new in the neighborhood. Never happened before. I was surprised."
Police say Cubit hasn't made any statements about the alleged assaults.
Captain Bobby Stewart says sexual crimes against children are always hard to deal with.
"You see more of the trend now, children being assaulted by someone they know, trust, other than a complete stranger. To me you have to be a sick individual to do something like that with a child," he says.
Cubit is being held on a $200,000 bond.
