JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

There are signs the economy is improving. Recent figures show the jobless rates across America are on the decline. But are things also improving in Mississippi?

The answer is yes, for most workers.

Unemployment rates across the state are on the decline. This month it's up at 8.5%, compared to last year at the same time at, 10.7%.

In Jackson, the job outlook is also improving. Right now unemployment is at 6.7%.   Last year in August it was 8.2%.

Mary Willouhby, of the Mississippi Department of Employment Security says, "If there are more people being employed that means that businesses are beginning to employ people maybe they're getting a little confidence or taking a chance to go ahead and employ somebody."

Willouhby says seasonal factors like, people leaving the workforce or students doing summer work, can influence those numbers.

"If they're out of school and are seeking employment and are able and available for work, they're considered unemployed," says Willoughby.

Jonathan Allison who is looking for work says,  "It's pretty tough right now some people say it's who you know but education is a big part in playing in that too."

Jonathan Allison is still on the hunt for a job, hoping to put his radio and TV degree to use.

A recent study released by the Associated General Contractors of America shows construction workers also struggling to put their skills to use in Jackson.

This year there are 8,800 construction jobs in the capital city, Compared to last year when there were 11,100 jobs. That's a decline of 21%.
