Visitors enjoy 'Day in the Country'

MADISON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Visitors to Madison's Chapel of the Cross Saturday enjoyed a cool 'Day in the Country'.

Despite the chill in the air, the church's annual festival, called 'A Day in the Country', attracted plenty of crowds. Along with children's activities and music, hundreds of loaves of bread were for sale, baked by congregation members themselves.

Another big attraction: the legendary 63-egg cake. It's a massive dessert, also made by church members. It's made with 63 egg whites.

"It won first prize at the very first state fair in 1859, by descendents of the lady who built the chapel, Frances Britton," says Sloan McKellar, a chairperson for the festival.

Half of the proceeds from 'A Day in the Country' go toward maintaining the historic church. The other half go to charity.
