No complaint filed after report of gunfire at state fair

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

In a Monday afternoon press release, the Hinds County Sheriff's Department says it responded to a shots fired call at the closing of the Mississippi State Fair on Saturday morning.

No one has filed a complaint and the department does not have suspects.

Jackson police tell WLBT there was an argument between 25 girls and gunfire erupted shortly afterwards, about 2:30 A.M.

A male victim had an injured toe, after the gunfire was reported. JPD says he ran outside the gates and later refused to be taken to the hospital by AMR.

The Hinds County Sheriff's Department has jurisdiction on the inside gates of the fairgrounds.

Fair officials expected a large crowd Monday because most schools in the area were not in session.

The parents who spoke with WLBT at the fairgrounds say they feel safe at the fair. However, most would rather visit during the day.

"We've been going here for years and years. I'm not saying that, you know, it couldn't happen, but I think the security overall is pretty good," said Eva Baker.

"Well, I don't feel unsafe here or anything because I see all of the security down here. So, it doesn't bother me," added Flora resident Valerie Palmer.

"I feel like I can see them and I can kind of keep them with me and I know where they are, and at night more adults come out and I don't feel comfortable bringing them," explained Heather Wixon.

Law enforcement  say if you see a problem find the nearest officer and report the issue, don't wait until someone gets hurt.

If you have any information about the reported shooting Saturday morning you're asked to call the Hinds County Sheriff's Department.
