Air show coming to Jackson airport

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A big air show is coming to the Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport next year. It's to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the airport in Rankin County.

The air show will be very similar to the one held during the 1990s at the same airport. It was known as Sky Parade in those days. The show next year will not be called Sky Parade, but rather be very much like it except it will not have hot air balloons.

It's a joint effort between the Jackson Municipal Airport Authority and the 172nd Military Airlift Wing of the Mississippi Air National Guard.  Airport Authority executive director Dirk Vanderleest confirmed for us that the big air show is coming.

"We are working on some of our acts right now."

Vanderleest says organizers hope it will be as big as Sky Parade. The event will be free and open to the public.

The Blue Angels, the U.S. Navy Aerial Demonstration Team will be here in 2013, just as they were back in 1997 at the old Sky Parade. Efforts are being made to get other military aircraft such as the F-15 and  F-16, but a firm schedule will not be known until early next year.

One of the most popular air show acts that has performed here, Tora, Tora, Tora, which is a re-enactment of the attack on Pearl Harbor, will definitely be performing here in the 2013 air show.

The air show will be held  the weekend of May the 11 and 12, which is Mother's Day Weekend.
