HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
A truck driver was taken to University Medical Center Wednesday morning after his 18-wheeler overturned along a stretch of I-55 in Hinds County.
The accident happened just south of the Wynndale Road Bridge, south of Byram, near exit 81. The driver of the truck was headed northbound, lost control and ran into the cable barrier in the median. The truck hauling gravel spilled its load on the highway. Interstate officials said the accident could have been much worse if the cable barrier wasn't in place.
"If the cable was not there it's very possible that the truck would have got into the opposing lanes and caused a lot of damage, wrecks, possibly lives lost," said MDOT Engineer, Steve Grantham.
The inside lanes of the highway were shut down for several hours after the wreck.
