Surplus City closing after 50 years

CLINTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

One of Mississippi's largest hunting and outdoor stores is going out of business.

Surplus City USA has served the Jackson market since 1962. It once was located at 4455 Highway 80 in Jackson. In 2000, the business moved its present location, 957 Highway 80 in Clinton.

The store is owned by Carl Thomas, 89, and has traditionally stocked one of the largest inventories of guns you would find anywhere.

Ed Mays, store manager, said there just hasn't been enough business in the last two years to keep the store open.

"Well the last two years have been tough and we haven't done enough business to justify it. That simple," said Mays.

He cited competition from stores like Bass Pro, Academy Sports, Van's and others as the reason Thomas is retiring.

Mays says they have not made a decision about how much longer they will keep Surplus City open, but he expects they will be open until they sell out of merchandise.
