(WMC-TV) - A 19-year-old pimp will spend 14 years in a federal prison.
Kala Bray previously pleaded guilty to the sexual trafficking of two teenager girls, a 15 year old and a 16 year old, during the summer of 2011 shortly after Bray turned 18.
According to the indictment, Bray and an accomplice, Vincent "Pistol Pete" Jones, took the two teens to Houston, Texas under the guise that they were going to a water park.
Instead, the indictment alleges that once in Texas, Bray and Jones drugged the two teens to the point they were incapacitated and then prostituted them out by posting ads on backpage.com.
"Kayla Bray was the boss. She was the pimp. She was exploiting these two girls," Prosecutor Johnathan Skrmetti told Judge Hardy Mays. "Kala Bray looks meek, but she is violent, deliberate, and manipulative."
Her defense attorney, Mike Scholl, argued that Bray was a victim herself and had been victimized by adults going back as early as 14 years old. Scholl says even her original attorney in this case had "sexually manipulated" Bray while representing her in previous cases in juvenile court. According to federal court records, her original attorney was Mark Sarapkin, who is no longer licensed to practice law in the state of Tennessee.
"I don't even know what fair is in this situation," Scholl sighed while addressing the judge. "I don't like to use the term 'product of her environment' because I think it's a cop out, but... her (criminal) history is somewhat a product of her environment."
During her allocution, Bray apologized to her family and her victim's families. She said it was never her intention to hurt anyone, that she is a changed person, and that she takes full responsibility for her actions.
"Now I see there is more to life than money, sex, and drugs," she told the court.
As originally charged, Bray faced the possibility of life in prison. However, because she cooperated with authorities on other cases, the judge granted an eight level reduction in sentencing guidelines.
"This case is sad in every respect," Mays said before handing down his ruling.
Vincent "Pistol Pete" Jones also pleaded guilty. He is scheduled to be sentenced in December.
