Hinds citizens share concerns with Board of Education

RAYMOND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A number of parents say they're worried about test scores at certain Hinds County schools.

The Concerned Citizens of the Hinds County School District organization read a letter Thursday evening outlining what they say are issues at schools in western Hinds County.

Specifically, they spoke of schools in the Bolton, Edwards, Raymond and Utica areas.

School board members and Superintendent Dr. Stephen Handley listened as a spokesperson talked about poor performing schools and administrators at those facilities.

The group says another problem is the lack of stability at the schools, especially during standardized tests.

"[If they] Take teachers out of the classroom, take principals and then you bring in a new face there. Someone who is not knowledgeable, number one about the children, you know, ability and not knowledgeable about the school," explained spokesperson Robbie Anderson.

Ivan Smith, president of the Hinds County Board of Education, agreed with most of the concerns made by the parents and citizens. He says the district must maintain consistency and accountability.

"Well they didn't put a time restraint on us. So, maybe it may not happen in a year but all we have to do is show progress moving forward."

Smith vowed to get back with the group about any progress made at the schools.
