Ridgeland man has mission trip money stolen

RIDGELAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Chance Morgan is a hair stylist with an opportunity to serve. A mission trip would take him to Honduras with the Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi to help provide medical needs for the poor.

"A great friend of mine kept, you know, trying to get me to go. You know, you need to go. You need to go. Didn't feel like I was lead to go yet and actually I finally sent in my information and everything and they picked me to go this year."

This past weekend, Morgan was setting up a wedding reception at Northpointe Red Barn. He left his car door unlocked while unloading materials.

When Morgan went to leave he discovered his satchel was missing.

"I automatically looked in the backseat if, you know, I'd thrown it back there, in which it wasn't, and that's when I called JPD," explained Morgan.

More than $3,000 was taken, including over $1,400 in donations for the mission trip.

"That's my worst thing, is the medical mission money. I wish I would still have it. They can have everything else."

Ridgeland police say Morgan's debit card was used at two locations on the same day the cash was stolen.

Pictures of the alleged thieves spending more than $300 with his card were given to local media. Morgan hopes someone will be able to identify the man and woman seen in the video.

"If people don't start stepping up and gettin' on the, you know, news media and stuff like that and watching out for each other it's going to keep on escalating until we're just scared to death to do anything."

Despite the setback, Morgan believes a blessing will come from the trip he still plans to take.

"I don't just want to depend on other people. It's also a mission I wanted to do, so I am also putting my own money into it."

Morgan says he has to raise $1,400 by December 1.

If you have any information on the theft, you're asked to call Crime Stoppers at 601-355-8477.
