Construction worker hospitalized after 5-story fall

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Jackson construction worker is lucky to be alive after falling from the top of a building. It happened around 11 a-am, at the Belhaven Medical Building, under construction on state street, across from Baptist hospital.

Work came to an immediate halt on the Belhaven medical building just before 11 Friday morning. A worker on the roof fell five stories to the ground, suffering traumatic injuries.

Robby Channell, Spokesman for Baptist Hospital says, " He has been taken to the hospital to get assessed and see what the issues are. From what we understand he was following all safety precautions, so were just trying to investigate and see what happened, what went wrong."

The iron worker who was hospitalized and remains in stable condition, was being subcontracted through Harrell Construction. Jackson police who responded to the scene say his harness broke, causing the fall more than fifty feet.

"He landed right from under where he was working, there's a hole there, he did fall in, he was conscious and awake when the ambulance got here," says Channell.

Construction workers immediately huddled for a meeting following the accident, then began to leave the construction site in large numbers.
