JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

President Obama is implementing his Affordable Healthcare Act in phases. But do Americans know how to take advantage of it?

Afordable healthcare was a big topic of discussion at the Hilton Hotel in Jackson Friday during a conference called "Healthcare Disparities, Pathways to Affordable Healthcare." Organizers say there are many reasons why some Americans are uninsured. Some people are healthy and don't feel they need it. But when disease hits, they're in trouble.

It's also important to explore the quality of healthcare available to people at all income levels.

"For example, who is it that's treating us? What are their qualifications? Where do people live, what's the quality of the service providers?" says Dr. Marinelle Payton of Jackson State University.

Maggie Wade served as a moderator for the event, put on by the JSU School of Health Sciences.
