Residents are moving or arming themselves after burglaries

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Kanwayta Johnson is concerned about the number of burglaries in her neighborhood, along Paden Street in south Jackson.

She had a rock thrown through her window and a week later Johnson's home was burglarized.

"I can't sleep at night cause knowing someone could be watching us trying to break-in or just walking the streets just looking for somebody's house to break-in to," explained Johnson on Friday afternoon.

Johnson says neighbors on both sides of her house and one across the street have been broken into, since she moved into the neighborhood in June.

"It's someone, I feel like is watching us," said Johnson.

The Jackson woman now has a security system and carries a gun for protection. And she says criminals will not run her out of her home.

Residents in the neighborhood are posting signs in their windows and installing burglar doors, just to ensure their safety and to keep their property.

Two doors down from Johnson, neighbor Nancy Thompson says someone tried to break into her home.

"I was at home around about three o'clock in the morning. Somebody was kicking on my backdoor trying to break in and it's time for me to go. I'm moving right now as we speak," said Thompson on Friday afternoon.

Jackson police are investigating burglaries in the area, according to residents.

Meanwhile, Johnson wants to create some type of neighborhood watch but has some reservations.

"It's a good idea but what scares me about that is, when we're at a neighborhood watch we're scared they're going to break into our houses," explained Johnson.

Added Thompson, "If they break into your house and steal your stuff, they don't care and if you in there they don't care."

The neighbors say police patrol the area but they want them to come by more often.

Johnson says parents must also keep track of their children.

3 on Your Side did give Johnson the telephone number to JPD's Community Service Division for more ideas on how residents can help police curb the number of burglaries in the area.
