JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
A big group of lively folks donned orange shirts Saturday morning, and took a walk with a buddy to recognize those with Down Syndrome.
The Buddy Walk simply requires that you grab a buddy, in this case about a thousand buddies, and take a walk. Saturday's quarter-mile walk around the Agriculture Museum was done to raise awareness and promote acceptance of people with Down Syndrome.
Along with the walk, children enjoyed lots of games and activities. Music filled the air, and some people even got up and danced!
The Buddy Walk is in its 10th year.
"It raises money for the Central Mississippi Down Syndrome Society. We have programs throughout the whole year for individuals, for people in the Central Mississippi Down Syndrome Society area," says Van Waits, president of the organization.
The benefit wraps up Saturday night with a concert by country music star Steve Azar at the Ag Museum, beginning at 7pm. Tickets are $50 at the gate. The event includes food, a cash bar, and a silent auction.
