JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
There's a new bright spot in North Jackson.
On Saturday morning, Mayor Harvey Johnson cut the ribbon at the Fuel Maxx gas station on Adkins Boulevard, marking the official opening of the new business. It's in the same space as the old Brookshire's gas station.
The business has been open for about a week. It is not a franchise, and is not affiliated with the nearby Carmax car dealership.
Owner Kevin Wright says he heard the community's cry to develop the area.
"We focus a lot on crime and all that, but it's gonna take us, the business owners, to take the boards down off the walls, let's get some bodies in those buildings," he says.
"We're so pleased at these young business owners because we're trying to create jobs, trying to stabilize the tax base," says Mayor Johnson. "Any time you have an abandoned building renovated, repaired, that's a big deal."
Virginia College will soon occupy the old Brookshire's building adjacent to the gas station. Mayor Johnson says a Save-A-Lot grocery store will also soon open in North Jackson.
