Fire caused heavy damage to Ridgeland apartment

RIDGELAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A fire caused heavy damage to a Ridgeland apartment building Sunday evening.

Firefighters say it happened shortly after 6 p.m. at Ridgeland Ranch Apartments.

A number of units in building 9 received heavy damage.

No injuries were reported.

Investigators are still trying to determine where and how the blaze started.

"It did go through some area that caused it to get to the roof, and once it got to the roof it spread from there," described Ridgeland Fire Chief Matt Bailey.

Witnesses say they tried to warn residents.

"We knocked on the door and nobody came to the door. So, then the next door neighbors came and they went and got everybody out of the thing and called the fire department," recalled resident Terrian King.

Bailey says the apartments are required to have smoke detectors. He doesn't believe a sprinkler system was installed at the complex.
