JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Flu season in Mississippi typically starts around December, but many are already getting vaccinated. Employees from the Mississippi State Department of Health received the flu vaccine for free on Wednesday morning.
State Health Officer Dr. Mary Currier was one of the many people from the health department who took time to get vaccinated. Dr. Currier said the flu shot is the best way to protect yourself from the flu.
She said it's especially important for young children and pregnant women to get vaccinated. You're also advised to get the shot if you're over sixty-five and if you suffer from chronic disease.
"It actually kills people every year and it makes people end up in the hospital, so getting flu vaccine is important not just for yourself, but for your loved ones so you don't carry it home to them," said Dr. Currier.
