JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
The president of the Hinds County Board of Supervisors, Robert Graham, has apologized to a female attorney for profanity-laced remarks made by fellow supervisor Kenneth Stokes during Monday's board meeting.
The board had just reversed itself on allowing an expansion of the Faircloth Landfill south of Clinton. The deciding vote causing the switch came from Stokes.
Mindy McKay Morton, an attorney representing the homeowners from the neighborhoods surrounding the landfill, expressed her disappointment to Stokes. He shot back with was tired of this "b-s" and later refused to back down.
"You can't call a member of a sitting body by name in those kind of attacks. If you attack me, I'm gonna attack you back and that's just the way it's done; equal pain," Stokes said.
"I would like to just personally offer an apology on behalf of the Hinds County Board of Supervisors. It was inappropriate behavior and we don't conduct our business that particular way," Graham said.
"You allow people to speak in the audience then I am going to respond to them," Stokes said.
"We are elected officials, the people have a right to speak and to voice their opinion to us regarding anything that they want to," Graham said.
The Faircloth Landfill can now be expanded by 30 acres, much to the disappointment of nearby homeowners.
Board president Robert Graham says Morton has accepted an apology from of the board of supervisors.
