JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
The Good Hope Community in Scott Countywas hit hard by what many believe was an early morning tornado.
Resident Edward Dearing has a scratch on his face, but he's thankful to be able to pick up the pieces after the storm. A massive tree in his front yard on Russell Community Road broke in half, pinning his soon to be mother-in-law inside.
"I called 911 I got my brothers chain saw got him out here my brother-in-law and we start trying to keep her calm cause she was about to go into shock," Dearing said.
Edward said that his little boy was sleeping in bed with his grandmother when the tree fell. The two could have been completely crushed if the tree had fallen a few inches over.
"The fire departments, Lake Volunteer Fire Department and with the help of the Forest Fire Department came out and they was able to cut the tree and get her out safely," said Alvin Seaney, the Emergency Management Director for Scott County.
Dearing's 3 year old slept through the whole storm.
"Surprisingly he never even woke up, he slept the whole way through we got him up and he was like what's going on," Dearing said.
The strong winds also wiped down several transmission towers on Salem Road, leaving many without electricity.
On Conehatta Road the pieces of what used to be a trailer home were scattered in the yard and across the street. The wind broke the ties from where the trailer home once sat on several blocks, picked it up and dumped it into the street. John Talbert said his sister and nephew were in the trailer.
"It threw them out of the house they was asleep in bed it threw them completely out of the house and they landed on the ground," Talbert said.
Despite all of the damage in Scott County, no one was severely injured.
Seaney has declared a local emergency in Scott County. He says he's reached out to MEMA to find out if the state can help storm victims.
