A team approach works well when it comes to motivating smokers to kick the habit.
Researchers tested a program that offered financial incentives to a team of co-workers if they quit smoking and stayed smoke-free.
The team got money for each successful participant at one week and one month -- and larger bonuses at three and six months.
Abstinence rates were high compared to other programs -- and half of the workers were still smoke-free after one year.
Researchers say emotional support and peer pressure from other team members improved the smokers' motivation.
This study was led by researchers at Catholic University of Korea College of Medicine and presented at the Annual AACR International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research.
