NATCHEZ, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
The annual Mississippi River Balloon Race in Natchez is now underway decorating the sky above the city as balloonists cross back and forth over the river.
The three day event attracts folks from across the state and country to get an up close view of some hot air aviation. Drifting high above the Mississippi River and the cities of Natchez and Vidalia, Louisiana, pilots compete for a target landing.
It's the largest weekend event for the city which organizers say gives a much needed economic boost to the community and state.Enthusiasts and spectators are filling up hotels, some months ahead of time. Organizers says once someone makes the trip for the festival, they're likely to make a return visit.
"We have many, many people who have come back year after year after year. Once they get bit by the bug, they're in for all of it," said race committee member Peter Burns, Jr.
The festival is in it's 27th year and will last through Sunday evening.
