RIDGELAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Metro residents run to honor police officers killed in the line of duty.

More than 125 runners laced up for the "Mississippi Run to Remember" 5K in Ridgeland on Saturday afternoon.

The event also thanks those who continue to wear a badge to protect and serve our communities.

Many folks celebrated as they crossed the finish line at the Renaissance Mall at Colony Park.

There was a balloon release before the run.

Organizers say they plan to make the run an annual event.

"We hope to grow it to be something a lot larger than this. Just the impact and the people that came out today, it's definitely a cause that many people will get behind. So, we're excited to see where it grows," said Co-organizer Samantha McCain.

Proceeds from the run will be donated to the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund.
