BRANDON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Walter Burton has pled guilty to capital murder charges, for the murder of Leslie Sheppard Doame, and was sentenced to life in prison.

Rankin County District Attorney Michael Guest told Burton and his partner in crime, Jermaine Tyler, that he wouldn't seek the death penalty if the duo pleaded guilty and were sentenced to life without parole.

Last September, Burton and Tyler broke into Doame's parent's home in rural Rankin County. The home burglary took a fatal turn when the duo realized Doame was home.

Doame's face was covered with a blanket and Tyler admitted to shooting Doame in the back of the head.

Tyler told officials Burton told him to shoot Doame so that no witnesses would be left. He pled guilty to in April.

Leslie's mother, Theresa, was allowed to speak just before the sentencing.  She says although the murder has deeply effected her family, they have found it in their hearts to forgive Burton.

"Were happy with the outcome," said Sheppard.  "This was not justice, it was mercy.  They showed no mercy to Leslie but were grateful and thankful he received mercy."
