Vicksburg and Murrah aren't known as big rivals on the field but an onside kick turned into an all out brawl last Friday night. Video shows players coming off the sidelines.
"Players did come on to the field from both sides. As far as the involvement of how many players, in each one, obviously it was on Vicksburg's sideline," described Mississippi High School Activities Association Executive Director Don Hinton.
The game was called shortly after the fight.
Vicksburg-Warren School District says coach Tavarius Johnson was hit in the head with helmet during the melee.
He suffered a seizure and possible concussion, according to Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Swinford.
"He's OK, a little bit sore. A little bit in pain but doing OK," explained Swinford on Monday afternoon.
The Mississippi High School Activities Association has launched an investigation into the fight, which could lead to suspensions, a school fine, or probation.
"If there are any suspensions, suspension as far as the teams are concerned, from a ball game or two ball games, since that's what's left on the schedule. There can be times, be ramifications, that continue into the next year (probation)," explained Hinton.
The Vicksburg Warren School District is conducting an investigation of its own, which could lead to student suspensions or expulsions.
The school district says it will wait for the MHSAA's investigation to wrap up before it decides if charges will be filed.
"At the end of the day, kids are kids. Football is football. Hopefully we can learn from this, in some way, to avoid it in the future," said Swinford.
She says Murrah coaches did a good job of keeping players on the sideline.
The Jackson Public School Schools says it is cooperating with the MHSAA to complete the investigation.
Vicksburg and MHSAA say ample security was in place at the game.
Both investigations are expected to be complete Tuesday.
