It's difficult to watch kids suffer through coughs during an illness.. But a new study confirms -- antibiotics won't help.
Doctors in Italy observed the outcomes of more than 300 kids who had to see a doctor for coughs due to the common cold.
Those who were put on antibiotics did no better than kids who didn't have any medication.
Cough suppressants seemed to provide some relief.
Doctors say giving antibiotics when they're not necessary can increase the chances for hard-to-treat, antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
This study is from the Clinic Center Private Hospital in Naples, Italy, and was presented at CHEST 2012, annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians.
