Hormone Therapy might fend off dementia

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Hormone therapy may reduce the risk for dementia but it seems, only when it's started at the right time.

Researchers from Johns Hopkins University followed more than 17-hundred women over age 65 for 11 years.

Those who began hormone therapy within 5 years of menopause reduced their risk of Alzheimer's dementia by nearly a third.

If started later in life, though, there was some indication it actually increased the risk.

Outside experts say more research on the exact link between hormone therapy and dementia is needed.
