RIDGELAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Mission Mississippi has designated October as Racial Reconciliation Celebration Month for the past 19 years.

Thursday night two pioneers of race relations in Mississippi were honored at the Jackson Convention Complex. Dr. Ollye Shirley of Jackson and Jack Reed of Tupelo have worked to further education and business during difficult times in Mississippi.

Neddie Winters, president of Mission Mississippi talked with us about the importance of the celebration.

"What I'd like for people not only at home but across the state to see that black and white people can come together and celebrate the opportunity we have to overcome the past, to be reconciled in the present and to be one in the future," Winters said.

Mission Mississippi has been recognized as a leader in the state and the nation for reconciliation efforts and healing. Winters says the goal is to change Mississippi one relationship at a time.
