Volunteers come out for 'Make a Difference Day'

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Volunteers at the Greenwood Cemetery Saturday morning are working to correct the problems created by wax myrtles planted incorrectly years ago. The roots have compromised some of the gravestones.

The group is also clearing off the winding vines and weeds along the fence that faces Davis Street. Houses line the street and face the cemetery.

"We feel like these people deserved to have a better view," says Association secretary Cecile Wardlaw.

The Association chose 'Make a Difference Day' to come out and work, but they don't necessarily wait for a special occasion.

"We make a difference a lot of days. We have had a 'Make a Difference Day' (in the past). The city came out one year and helped us. We don't particularly schedule around Make a Difference Day, but we do come frequently during the year," Wardlaw says.

The City of Jackson prepped the area for them, and city workers also helped a group of young ladies Saturday morning on West Capitol Street. A dance group called The Purple Diamonds cleaned up trash and planted mustard greens.

"They just ran a tractor through here. Grass was real tall. We picked up these plastic bags, got the rake," says Hali Peterson. "It's making the community look better."

The girls are between 12 and 18 years old, and participate in many city events. They're happy to gather for a cause that will make an enduring difference.

"It feels good to give back to the community, make it look better. I can say I helped with this cleaning up," says Chelsea Hall. @
