JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A South Jackson family is lucky to be alive after fire destroyed their home off Terry Road.

Flames overtook the home at 153 Mason Boulevard while the Cranford family was sleeping.

Jackson fire crews were called to the scene around 4:15 a.m.

Thirty seven year old Charlie Cranford said he didn't hear anything unusual and happened to get up while the fire spread throughout the wood framed home.

Ironically Cranford works for the Salvation Army Family Store.

His wife Rebecca and his 72 year old mother Martha had just moved into the house about four months ago.

Cranford awakened his family who escaped with only the clothing they were wearing.

"I just happened to get up and open the door and saw the glow from it. We just came out and stood over there while they were putting it out," said Charlie Cranford.

"I thought he was joking. What happened? You were asleep? Yeah, he woke me up. I said 'Oh you're kidding' and turned back over. He came back 'Mama get out of that bed. The house is on fire'," said Martha Cranford.

Salvation Army representatives were at the scene of the morning fire.

The organization is assisting the family with recovery.
