JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
A former clerk in the Hinds County District Attorney's office entered a guilty plea to a charge of taking a bribe in Hinds County Circuit Court Monday morning.
Testimony in circuit court indicated Walter first accepted a $200 bribe, then later a bribe of $750. He was caught by an investigator for the attorney general's office who was wired for sound.
Walter entered a guilty plea before Judge Winston Kidd, but told the judge he didn't think he was doing anything wrong. He had been replaced by Hinds County District Attorney Robert Schuler Smith, who talked with us about the case.
"Well, the entire situation is very disappointing and disheartening," said Smith. He was asked why would Walter plead guilty if he didn't do anything wrong. Smith's reply was, "I'm not sure."
Walter's attorney, Malcolm Harrison, did not return our calls.
D. A. Smith says Walter could get up to ten years in prison for taking the bribes.
