Compared to white women -- black women appear to have higher death rates the first several years after a breast cancer diagnosis.
Doctors at the Harvard School of Public Health followed nearly 20-thousand women with stage 1 to stage 3 breast cancer over about 7 years.
Non-Hispanic black women had a 48-percent higher risk for breast cancer death in the first 3 years after diagnosis compared to white patients.
The difference was most striking for those with estrogen receptor-positive tumors. Those cancers are often considered treatable.
