JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A forum on protecting religious freedom was held Monday in the capital city.

The session on Defending and Restoring Religious Liberty got underway at the Mississippi Museum of Art.

Kelly Shackelford, President and CEO of the Plano Texas based Liberty Institute, was the guest speaker.

The constitutional law expert said he is making the audience aware of the attacks on religious freedom that are occurring across the country.

The event was sponsored by the Walker Foundation.

"We're just having to battle for a lot of freedoms that we used to take for granted, but I think there's a movement across the country of people that really want to get back to what this country was all about and it was based on religious freedom. And so we're just gonna have to be willing to stand for those things if we're gonna preserve them," said Shackelford.

The Texas lawyer said the Liberty Institute is the largest legal institution in the country that focuses exclusively on religious freedom.
