JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The first black president of the 16-million member Southern Baptist Convention received a standing ovation after a spirited sermon in Jackson's First Baptist Church.

Reverend Fred Luter is no stranger to Mississippi, having preached at more churches in this state than anywhere else. But it is his first time back in the Magnolia State since his historic election in June.

Luter says he would like to see more diversity in the Southern Baptist Convention.

"It cannot stop with me" said Reverend Luter. "We've gotta include other African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians. We gotta have more diversity in the convention. We want our convention to look like heaven's gonna look like."

Luter is senior pastor of Franklin Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans.

The Southern Baptist Convention is the nation's largest protestant denomination, with more than 45,700 affiliated churches.
