COPIAH COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Copiah County female deputy was attacked and beaten Wednesday evening on a domestic violence call. Sheriff Harold Jones tells us the man who fought with the deputy is no stranger to law enforcement.

It happened on Crawford Lane right off Highway 51 in Crystal Springs around 5. We have exclusive video from the scene. Sheriff Jones says Jimmy Smith, who is from Hazlehurst, has been in and out of trouble. His office had an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

Sheriff Jones says when a 9-1-1 call came in for a domestic disturbance involving Smith, Deputy Tammy Breedlove responded and also tried to serve the outstanding warrant. That's when she was attacked and beaten by Smith.

Two neighbors intervened and held Smith until help arrived. We talked with Smith's girlfriend who did not want to be identified.

"He was banging her up, throwing her around. If it wasn't for Mr. Troy and my Uncle Bobby Chase coming to help her, ain't no telling what he would did to me and her in there because he reached for her gun 3 or 4 times", Smith's girlfriend said.

"I had to help wrestle him to the ground there, to hold him there so we could get the cuffs on him. You and.. Me and another guy there, because the officer was hurt", Troy Ayers said.

Ayers says even in handcuffs Smith made a run for it before being stopped by an officer. Sheriff Jones says Deputy Breedlove was being examined at a local hospital.

Jimmy Smith is being charged with simple assault on a police officer,  which is a felony. He is being held in the Copiah County Jail.
