While patients have been priority some New York City hospitals are now trying to salvage medical research that may have been damaged in Superstorm Sandy.
More than 200 patients were evacuated after a major power failure at N-Y-U Langone Medical Center earlier this week.
But the lack of power also damaged or destroyed many cell lines and lab tissue samples which were left to thaw when the refrigerators and freezers stopped working.
In many cases, this represents years' worth of research into heart disease, diabetes and cancer.
A large portion of lab animals were located in a flooded basement. A reported 2,500 mice were wiped out by the storm.
Those mice had been instrumental in studying the effects of genetic mutations that could affect seizures.
