Thousands of Mississippi students participate in mock election

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Thousands of students across Mississippi cast votes Thursday morning in a mock presidential election at their schools.

Of the 104,524 votes cast, 57,880 or 55 percent were for Barack Obama and 46,724 or 45 percent were for Mitt Romney, according to the Secretary of State's Office.

The mock election is part of Promote the Vote -- an educational program of the Secretary of State's Office designed to encourage civic participation in youth.

Secretary of State Delbert Hoseman greeted one group of students at the Old Capitol Thursday and encouraged them to keep good voting habits. He said he hopes the students' parents follow suit.

Hoseman says absentee ballot registration numbers have been less this year, which typically means a lower voter turnout.

The group also discussed advantages and disadvantages of the electoral college system.
