JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

This is a view of the runway being rebuilt, you can only get from Skycopter 3.

The east runway of the Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport is expected to be back in operation by April 1, 2013.

Jackson has been operating with one runway since 2010.

It is 8,500 feet long, and a 150 feet wide, meaning it can handle any airplane now flying in the world, when it is complete. Problems with Yazoo Clay led to a complete rebuild of the runway, originally started in 2010. It was supposed to be completed by Christmas of 2010.

We asked Jackson Airport Authority Executive Director Dirk Vanderleest about the delay in reconstruction.

"We had to do some redesign, once we got that complete and engineers were satisfied, with the proposed specifications, we went out and readvertised the project," Vanderleest said.

It is a $14.2 million dollar project, originally handled by Riffenberg Construction out of North Carolina, which was terminated because of the quality of the asphalt. It is now being handled by APAC of Mississippi.

"At the end of the day asphalt is asphalt, it's just a matter of putting it down correctly. So Dirk Vanderleest says the renovated runway will be complete by April first of 2013, meaning that Jackson will once again have an instrument runway.
